According to the Secret Service, the individual approached the north gate at approximately 1:30am carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can. He drove through the gate as another vehicle exited and was confronted by agents.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Rick Bradshaw stated that the man was ordered to drop the items. He reportedly placed the fuel can down but raised the shotgun into a firing position. Two Secret Service agents and a sheriff’s deputy discharged their weapons, “neutralising the threat.” No law enforcement officers were injured.

President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were at the White House at the time of the incident.

While authorities have not officially named the suspect, individuals familiar with the situation identified him as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin of North Carolina. Law enforcement confirmed the suspect was in his early 20s, from North Carolina, and had been reported missing by his family days earlier. Investigators recovered a box for the shotgun from his vehicle and are working to determine motive and compile a psychological profile.

The Secret Service agents involved have been placed on administrative leave pending review, in accordance with agency policy.

The incident adds to a series of security threats and acts of political violence in recent years. Trump was wounded during an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024. A separate armed individual was apprehended near Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course later that year and subsequently sentenced to life in prison.

The broader climate has included additional violent episodes targeting political figures, including arson attacks, shootings, and high-profile arrests near government buildings.

Sunday’s incident, however, was resolved within minutes.

The gate remained intact.

The president was not present.

Security protocols functioned as designed.

At Mar-a-Lago, the dress code may vary.

The perimeter does not.
