Greenland has formally informed President Donald Trump that it is, in fact, medically functional.

After Trump announced on Truth Social that he would dispatch a “great” American hospital ship to the Arctic territory to treat people who are “sick and not being taken care of,” Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen responded with what diplomats call clarity.

“We say no thank you from here,” Nielsen wrote in a Facebook post. He noted that Greenland operates a public healthcare system where treatment is free for citizens — subtly contrasting this with the United States, “where it costs money to go to the doctor.”

The prime minister also urged the U.S. president to replace social media declarations with direct dialogue.

“Talk to us instead of just making more or less random outbursts on social media,” Nielsen wrote, adding that cooperation requires respect for decisions made locally.

The exchange follows Trump’s continued interest in Greenland’s strategic significance, including prior remarks about its value for missile defense and Arctic positioning. On Saturday, Trump said his administration was coordinating with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry — currently serving as special envoy to Greenland — to send the hospital ship.

Greenland’s response suggests the island does not consider itself in need of emergency maritime intervention.

So the current diplomatic status reads:

Hospital ship: Proposed.

Healthcare crisis: Unconfirmed.

Free medical system: Operational.

Facebook diplomacy: Active.

Greenland remains open to cooperation.

It would simply prefer that the conversation begin before the ships do.
